Screenings
Screenings
Kansas schools provide state-mandated health screenings to help identify potential health concerns that may impact a student’s learning, development, and overall well-being.
KCKPS conducts required screenings in the school setting in accordance with Kansas requirements and established district procedures. When a screening indicates that additional evaluation may be needed, parents/guardians are notified and encouraged to follow up with an appropriate healthcare provider.
School screenings are intended to support early identification and do not replace regular examinations by a healthcare provider.
Hearing screenings are used to identify hearing loss and to make appropriate audiological, medical, and/or educational referral to maximize hearing and learning potential. Students to be screened annually are:
- All preschoolers
- Kindergarten, 1st grade, 3rd grade, 5th grade, 8th grade, and 11th grade
- Students new to the district
- Students with hearing loss
- Any student upon parent or teacher request
Vision screenings are utilized for early identification of students with potential vision problems. Students to be screened are:
- All preschoolers
- Kindergarten through third grade, fifth, seventh, and 10th grades
- Students new to the district
- Any student upon parent or teacher request
Mandated Dental Screenings
Kansas law requires schools to provide dental screenings for students to help identify possible oral health concerns that may affect a child’s overall health, attendance, and success at school.
A dental screening is a brief visual check of your child’s teeth and mouth performed by qualified personnel. It is not a complete dental examination and does not replace regular visits with your child’s dentist.
Parents/guardians will be notified if the screening identifies a concern that may need follow-up with a dental provider. Families who need assistance accessing dental care may contact their school nurse for information about available community resources.
KCKPS is committed to supporting the health and well-being of every student. Regular dental care is an important part of keeping children healthy and ready to learn.
