KCKPS and the Diploma+ Program Celebrate Community Partners Who Make Real-World Learning Possible

Behind every meaningful learning experience at Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools is a team of people who believe in the potential of our students.
This year, the district's Diploma+ Program brought that team together for its first-ever Partners in the Game Recognition and Appreciation Luncheon, celebrating the businesses, organizations, and community partners who help turn classroom learning into real-world opportunities for students.
The event was held Tuesday, November 3, at Sporting KC Park and made possible through funding from the Kauffman Foundation's Real World Learning grant.
Diploma+ is a flagship program at KCKPS that gives students opportunities to earn industry-recognized credentials, complete college courses, and participate in real-world learning experiences before graduation.
Community partnerships play an important role in making those opportunities possible.
Organizers said the luncheon provided an opportunity to recognize those partnerships while reflecting on the impact they have on students.
“Although we work alongside these partners throughout the school year, this special gathering allowed us to pause, express our gratitude, share the impact of their contributions, and, most importantly, hear directly from the students whose lives they helped shape,” said Work-Based Learning Coordinator Curtissa Verge.
One of the most meaningful parts of the luncheon was hearing from students and alumni about their experiences. Several alumni shared how projects they started in high school continued beyond graduation, giving them the opportunity to bring their ideas to life.
Their stories demonstrated how the impact of work-based learning can extend far beyond a classroom assignment or a single school year.
The luncheon also created opportunities for students, teachers, and community partners to sit together and share their experiences. These conversations allowed participants to hear different perspectives, reflect on their contributions, and better understand the role each plays in helping students succeed.
“Their stories reminded us that partnership is more than just opening doors to opportunities. It is about investing in potential, inspiring possibilities, and helping students envision a future filled with promise,” Verge said.
As the district looks ahead, the goal is to continue building on these relationships, strengthening partnerships, and expanding access to meaningful learning experiences for students.
“As we continue our Diploma+ work, we want more students to have access to experiences that help them explore careers, apply their learning, and make informed decisions about their next steps. This celebration was a reminder that our partners are helping make those goals possible,” Verge said.
Through these partnerships, KCKPS students have opportunities to do more than learn about their futures. They get to experience what's possible.
