Wildcats Hold Off The Hawks

On February 4th, the Washington Wildcats faced the J.C. Harmon Hawks at Washington High School. Although the Hawks made a few runs, the Wildcats ended up pulling away and winning 64-36, which begs the question, how far will the Washington Wildcats go this year?
Basketball is a game of runs, and although Harmon did have a few, the Wildcats' game plan proved to hold steady.
“Our game plan worked. We came out dominating on defense and we attacked them and it got us in the lead” said Washington senior Calil White.
The Wildcats have a current record of 6-8 according to KSHSAA standings, but if they continue to perform the way they did on Friday night then we could see them coming up with a big finish this season.
The coaches on both teams seemed ready and focused on improving their skills following the big game.
“My kids grow every day, we practice every day, definitely better than the last time we played Washington,” said Harmon Head Coach Keith Richardson. “I feel great they’re student-athletes [who are] always getting better.”
It’s awesome to see how the KCKPS coaches keep a positive outlook on the growth of their programs. Both Richardson and Washington Head Coach Michael Green are KCKPS Alumni.
“We will continue to get better, critique our mistakes. It's all about just getting better,” Richardson said.
Both the Hawks and Wildcats are a part of the newly minted Meadowlark Conference. Currently Topeka-Highland Park holds the top spot at 13-0, followed by Atchison who sits at 13-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of Highland Park.
